Football Players

"Ross Carter

and John Sylvester play in separate Chicago games,
Alongside Dan Fortmann because he “has a football name”,
The Pirates boast of Barnum and the Shakespeare that has made (not wrote) plays,
But the roar of Rennebohm and the “Choo Choo” Train quieted that in mere days.
The Packers play ‘Fromhart’ as if it’s easy as a ‘Cruice’
Leaving nothing but “Bear”, Maniaci, “Bones” on the field as the Dodgers lose,
Berwanger’s win of the first Heisman sent the Eagles high,
but, like Crayne, nothing compares to how my Dodger’s “Babe” can fly.
The snap of the ball as fresh as the air
as the first NFL draft we share."

This is a take on Fitgerald’s healing list of football players from the 1930’s. 1936, about the time Fitzgerald was creating countless lists from his hermit state, the National Football League was just beginning its baby steps into the greatest American sport. 1936 was the 17th official season of the NFL, it was the year that the 4th NFL championship game was played, and on February 8th the first draft was help at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Fitzgerald states in The Crack-Up that one of his many lists was that of football players from his time; this is that mock-list.
